Evolution in the trials on Cypriot identity of children from mixed marriages of Turkish Cypriots and Turks About 10.000 children born from mixed marriages, said lawyer Metin Haqki
The first results have been seen in the cases to obtain citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus from people born in mixed marriages of Turkish Cypriots and Turks, said lawyer Metin Haqki, saying that they won two cases involving administrative negligence that had been registered in connection with applications of people who had not received a response for many years.
According to the GMP, in statements in the occupied territories, Mr. Haqki said that these cases were registered with the Administrative Court in the Republic of Cyprus and concern the granting of identity cards and passports of the Republic to children born in mixed marriages between persons from Turkey and Cyprus.
Hakki, a decision taken on 3 June 2021 in administrative case number 844/18 stated that political uncertainty or talks were not an excuse for not answering the applications, while the decision issued last week in case number 943/18 stated that the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus acted in violation of the law by not answering the applications within a reasonable period of time.
According to the TC lawyer, their next step will be to take the answers to the citizenship applications to local or international courts. He pointed out that the European Court of Human Rights would be their last option and that these procedures take time and require "iron nerves."
It is estimated, he said, that about 10.000 children were born from mixed marriages between Turkish Cypriots and Turks and argued that the non-granting of passports or identity cards of the Republic of Cyprus to these people or the obstacles inserted in this matter made life difficult for many families and limited the children's ability to study in European countries.
He noted that it is estimated that 34.8% of applications for citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus were submitted in the period 2004-2007, 6.3% in the period 2008-2011, 32.9% in the period 2012-2015 and 16.1% after 2016. He said that after the first applications, 2,000 citizenships were granted and later the process slowed down and stopped due to political approaches.
He also claimed that there are people who meet the criteria required by the Republic of Cyprus and were not granted citizenship, while there are many people who do not meet these criteria but are entitled to citizenship under international agreements and conventions and the process concerning them has not been completed.
