The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works welcomes with satisfaction the approval by the European Commission of the extension of the implementation of the Incentive Plan for Airlines to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic until the end of June 2022.
The purpose of the plan is the restoration of air connections, which will contribute to the development of the aviation sector, support the tourism sector and the wider economy of the Republic of Cyprus.
The plan was implemented as of 1 July 2020 and to the extent that the pandemic allowed it was used by airlines offering flights connecting Cyprus with the rest of the world.
The beneficiaries of the scheme are airlines that meet the criteria set out in European Commission Decision C(2022)1084 final, dated 18 February 2022, with a cumulative ceiling of €2.3 million,
[/B] on the basis of which if the beneficiaries receive aid either under this measure or aid under other measures approved by the Commission under Section 3.1 of the Temporary Framework, the overall ceiling per undertaking, as set out in Part 3.1 of the Temporary Framework and in Part 2(6) of the European Commission Decision, for State aid measures will be respected.
The total cost of the project is estimated at EUR 6.13 million. The cost is expected to be utilised by 60 airlines by the end of June 2022.
The amount of the subsidy will be granted on the basis of the criteria set out in the incentive plan, which is published on the website of Hermes Airports Ltd.
The Minister for Transport, Communications and Works wishes to thank once again the European Commission for approving the request and for its support during this difficult period. As Mr Karousos says, apart from providing incentives through the Plan, as a state Cyprus has taken the initiative at European level for air connectivity with the preparation and promotion of the Declaration on Air Connectivity. The main objective of the Declaration is to support the air transport sector, especially the one affected by the coronavirus pandemic, focusing on the peripheral and island Member States of the European Union. Cyprus' initiative was warmly welcomed by 12 other EU Member States, which are expected to co-sign the Declaration next April.
