Erdogan hopes for operation of Akkuyu nuclear power plant in 2023

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan expressed hope that the two units of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant will be put into operation in 2023, noting that "a second nuclear power plant is coming soon".

In a speech at the General Assembly of the Confederation of Young Entrepreneurs of Turkey, the Turkish President said that "our goal of putting our country in the top 10 economies of the world is not an empty promise, an empty rhetoric, a rhetorical statement, a bubble burst from the political podium." Rather, he said, "we first created the infrastructure to make that claim a reality and then stated our goal."

Our policy, he said, "is a policy of jobs and services. We are not stopping, we are working," adding that "a second nuclear power plant is coming soon. We have work ahead of us."

Addressing the opposition, the Turkish president said "in your own life you had only candles and oil lamps. While we have come this far. And we didn't stay this far. We built solar plants, nuclear power plants, everything you couldn't imagine, we turned it into reality."

On Akkyu, Erdogan expressed hope that its two units will be put into operation in 2023.

So, he asked, "why do you think there is an attempt to deprive our country of this opportunity when there are 443 nuclear power plants in operation in 32 different countries around the world and there are still plants under construction?"

Why, he continued, "does Akkuyu, one of Turkey's most strategic projects, bother someone who eats this country's bread and drinks its water? What could be the reason why the leader of the country's second largest party participated in this negative campaign?"

Addressing Kemal Kilicdaroglu, he invited him if he wants to go to Akkuyu to see what the nuclear power plant looks like.
