A new yellow warning for prolonged showers and severe thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office.
Specifically, the warning is in effect from 2 a.m. Tuesday until 4 p.m. and concerns a combination of prolonged showers and the possibility of strong isolated thunderstorms. Total rainfall is possible to locally exceed 55 mm per 24 hours.
The Elps weather system will affect the region until Wednesday evening.
Tonight, the weather will be partly cloudy but will later become mainly cloudy with showers and isolated thunderstorms, initially in the western half of the island but then in the remaining areas. In the mountains it will snow at times. Locally the phenomena will be prolonged or even intense. Winds will initially be variable, light, 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly southeast to south, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and on the west coast occasionally very strong, 6 Beaufort. The sea will initially be a little choppy, soon becoming choppy to choppy and in the west to choppy. Temperatures will drop to 2 degrees inland, around 8 degrees on the west and north coasts, around 5 degrees on the rest of the coast and around minus 6 degrees in the higher mountains. Locally in the mountains, semi-mountains and inland frost will form.
Tomorrow, the weather will be cloudy, with intermittent showers and isolated thunderstorms. In the higher mountains it will snow at times. Locally, the phenomena will be prolonged or intense. In the late afternoon the weather will improve noticeably. Winds will initially be mainly southwest, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and occasionally on the headwinds up to very strong, 6 Beaufort, becoming later mainly southwest to west moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will become choppy to choppy and in the foreshore wavy. Temperatures will rise to 12 degrees inland, around 14 degrees on the coast and 2 degrees in the higher mountains. Locally in the higher mountains there will be frost.
Tomorrow night, the weather will be partly cloudy and isolated showers may occur, mainly on the coast. Winds will be mainly southwest to northwest, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, but initially offshore up to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be choppy and initially offshore to choppy.
On Wednesday, the weather will be partly cloudy and partly cloudy, with local showers or thunderstorms. Snowfall is expected in the mountains. The temperature will drop slightly to be well below average.
On Thursday and Friday, the weather will be mainly clear, although occasionally there will be localised clouds. Temperatures will rise slightly on Thursday and show no significant change on Friday, but will remain below average climatic values.
