Former US President Donald Trump was sentenced yesterday by a New York judge to pay 10.000 dollars a day while he refuses to provide authorities with accounting and tax documents requested as part of an investigation into his company.

"This is a great victory, a court has ruled in our favor and convicted Donald Trump of obstruction" of justice, New York Attorney General, Democrat Letitia James, wrote on Twitter.

"Donald Trump should pay $10,000 a day for every day he continues to defy a court order to deliver documents to my office," added the attorney general, who for years has been investigating possible tax fraud on behalf of Trump's company, the Trump Organization.

On February 17, another New York judge, at James' request, ordered the Republican mogul and two of his children, Donald Jr. and Ivanka, to testify under oath as part of that investigation.

The Trumps appealed, but the court also requested that prosecutors be given various documents before March 31.

With no response from the Trump family, Letitia James appealed to the New York State Supreme Court, asking that Trump be convicted for refusing to comply with the court's order.

The New York Attorney General believes the company fraudulently overstated the value of the properties it owned when applying for bank loans and reduced that value when reporting them to the IRS to pay less taxes.

If Trump does not pay the fine, he could be jailed, based on New York state law that allows judges to order the imprisonment of those who do not comply with court orders, as Sarah Kryshoff of the law firm Day Pitney explained.

She clarified, however, that such a scenario is not very likely and that the judge will most likely choose another sentence.
