The Police are very sensitive to issues concerning animal abuse and mistreatment, a Force communications officer said, calling on citizens to immediately report such incidents

Following a complaint by the Cyprus Society for the Protection of Animals (KEPZ), concerning inaction by the authorities regarding an incident of two dogs being kept in a cage by pewter in the middle of a heatwave in an area of the Nicosia district, Eleni Constantinou, Police communications officer,[/B] told the Cyprus News Agency that they have had several complaints so far which have been investigated and individuals have also been taken to court.

Specifically, KEPZ President Toula Poyatzi said in a post on social media and in a statement that two puppies were trapped in a cage of tin cages on the sides and roof.

According to her, a telephone complaint was made to Veterinary Services "who requested that the complaint be sent by fax or e-mail. Unfortunately the person who complained has neither fax nor e-mail." Then, she says, the same person called the Police for Animals, "which is virtually non-existent," Ms. Poyatzi added.

"I declare responsibly that the law for the protection and welfare of animals is lame," she added. Answering

In response to a question from the Cyprus News Agency, Constantinou said that members of the Police are immediately activated to investigate any information concerning such cases. "For this reason, the Police for Animals has also been set up recently, with a number of our members staffing this service in all police stations nationwide," she said.

She added that these members have been trained to be able to handle such cases, and their training is ongoing.

"We have had several complaints so far which have been investigated, and persons have also been taken to court," she said."

People can call the central telephone numbers of the Police Directorates (PD) of each province and from there, they will be connected to a competent person of the department who will take up the complaint and start investigation, she added.

"We invite the public, in case such an incident comes to their attention, to inform us immediately, so that we can proceed together with the other competent authorities for the welfare of the animals," she said.

Constantine clarified that when someone calls an ADC and is contacted by the Police Animal Officer, they will be asked to make a written complaint, and then the investigation of the complaint begins.
