"People who abuse or kill animals are dangerous to society" says the Movement of Ecologists on the new incident in Larnaca What it says in a statement
The Movement of Ecologists for Citizens' Cooperation expresses its disgust and sorrow for the horrific incident of killing a dog, this time in a village in the Larnaca district.
Among other things, after condemning the incident, it asks the Police to complete its investigations soon and bring the case to court.
Furthermore, it notes that people who abuse or kill animals are dangerous to society. "The moment they commit such criminal acts against animals they will not hesitate to harm even a human being."
"The new incident of killing a dog in Larnaca District causes dismay. As we are informed, a dog owner, as he was in a spot near his yard, heard a gunshot and immediately heard a dog's cry. He then saw a man holding a shotgun and - upon his return to his paddock his dog sustained wounds to his body and later expired.
We welcome the intervention of the Kofinus Regional Police Station where they went to the scene for examination and collection of the dog's body for a necropsy to determine the cause of his death, as well as the immediate issuance of an arrest warrant against the alleged perpetrator.
The Coordinator of the Movement's Animal Welfare Group, Ms. Anthi Mouzouri, said that "we have repeated many times that people who abuse or kill animals are dangerous to society. The moment they commit such criminal acts against animals they will not hesitate to harm even a human being. Studies have proven that violence against animals is considered repetitive and of escalating intensity, to the point where the perpetrator, familiar with the devaluation of life as a concept, may turn to crimes against human life.
The case of the murder of a dog in Larnaca province is indicative of the view of some that dogs and animals in general have neither value nor a soul. We call on the Police to complete its investigations as soon as possible and bring the case to court. They call once again for the penalties to be applied as provided by law without mitigating circumstances. The punishment must act as a deterrent to any other person who thinks they can commit such a heinous crime and get away with just a fine. We urge the legal department to seek the maximum penalty that can be imposed in such cases. As a movement of environmentalists working with citizens we will follow the case until justice is served."
