Disappointment of "presidency" for non-response of Speaker of the House of Commons to invitation in the occupied territories What they broadcast in the occupied territories
The disappointment of the Turkish Cypriot side over the non-acceptance on the part of the Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle to travel and have contacts in the occupied territories during his official visit to Cyprus, expresses the "presidency".
As reported from the occupied territories in a written statement by the "presidency", despite an invitation extended to him from its side to have contacts in the occupied territories, Sir Hoyle did not accept and had contacts only in "southern Cyprus", as it refers to the areas under the control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, which caused the disappointment of the Turkish Cypriot side.
Noting that despite the fact that the UK and its representatives have expressed on every occasion that they are in favour of a viable reconciliation in Cyprus, both sides should be treated on the basis of their "equal rights acquired in Cyprus", particularly as one of the guarantor powers, the "presidency" says it is "unacceptable" that it does not see the Turkish Cypriot side receiving the same treatment.
"The fact that the two sides were not given the same opportunity and the natural/acquired sovereign equality was not respected does not serve the cooperation that is necessary on the island of Cyprus and the security and stability in our region but perpetuates the status quo which is considered unsustainable," it said.
If, it adds, "the UK is sincere in its statements that it is promoting a just, realistic and sustainable reconciliation in Cyprus, it should adopt an approach that respects the principle of absolute equality of the parties in its dialogue and contacts with them," the statement concludes.
