Low barometric pressure affects Cyprus due to "Diomedes" What is the difference compared to Greece What is expected to prevail and how long will it last The Director of Meteorology in the Cyprus Times
Intense weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, snowfall and gusty winds have been prevailing in Greece for days due to the bad weather "Diomedes" that has been "sweeping" the country for the last 24 hours.
As of today, the low barometer of "Diomedes", centered in Crete, is moving slowly eastwards and is also affecting Cyprus with the Cyprus Meteorological Service issuing a yellow warning for prolonged showers and locally heavy thunderstorms effective from 6am.
Speaking to the Cyprus Times, the Director of the Meteorological Service, Cleanthis Nicolaides explained that these are phenomena which will be effective for up to two days-that is, until Thursday evening[/B] which, however, may prevail until the following days.
In particular, as Mr. Nicolaides, in Cyprus, the bad weather "Diomedes" is not expected beyond the above, to bring extreme weather phenomena - as we see prevailing in Greece - as the phenomena that will prevail on our island will be merely affected by "Diomedes".
"The yellow warning that has been issued and lasts until tomorrow night concerns the weather phenomena affected by the low barometric pressure caused by Diomede, but we are not expected to have the same degree of phenomena as in Greece," he said.
He also noted that rainfall and thunderstorms in Cyprus may continue in the coming days and it is very likely that the warning that has been issued will be renewed, but will not be affected by "Diomedes" which will "bid us farewell" tomorrow evening.
Where did the bad weather "Diomede"
Referring to the name of the bad weather currently in force, Mr. Nicolaides explained that it is a decision made through the process of naming extreme weather systems affecting the Eastern Mediterranean.
Historically, Diomedes was one who had divine thinking and was advised by Zeus. He was a hero of Greek mythology and king of Argos, known mainly for his participation in the Trojan War. He was the son of Tydeus and Dipylus. In Homer's Iliad, Diomedes is considered the second best warrior of the Achaeans along with Ajax. He was the nephew of Heracles and a good friend of Odysseus.
The three of them were the favourite heroes of the goddess Athena. According to Virgil's Aeneid, Diomedes was one of the warriors who invaded Troy using the Trojan Horse.
