The talented actor referred to the success of Sasmos and explained why he did not go to acting school
Dimitris Lalos spoke about everyone and everything. The actor who this year is his year as he stands out for the role of "Mathiou" in "Sasmos" was a guest on ERT's show "He and the other". The talented actor spoke about the role of the villain in the show, how people treat him and his personal life as a new dad.
"I'm a good guy by accident," he said in the beginning, responding to the hosts' teasing about the bad character he has shown in the show. "I had known recognition through theatre. But theatre is very limited in space and time... What you do in film and television can be seen in reruns. From home I go to the theatre and filming and vice versa so I don't meet anyone. Maybe on Attiki Odos someone will say hello to me. I go to the supermarket but they are used to me there," the actor said talking about the recognition he receives through Sasmo and went on to talk about the messages he receives from people saying: "The messages I get are awesome. Very funny a lot of times. I'm happy because people recognize my art. The truth is I haven't read any negative comments. For the character in the show there are negatives because Mathios is a one-trick pony. They usually say that you shouldn't do it that way."
Does he have similarities with Mathios?
When asked if Dimitris Lalos has similarities in his character with Mathios, he replied. This is my profession. To get into a role, to magnify some elements that I don't have and to diminish some other elements of mine... But I don't know what happens and every character I play I get told 'This character suits you very much', I don't know how that happens. To be a tough but sensitive person like Mathius to me is the opposite, I'm a sensitive person with tough elements. I come from a village in Elassona, which is a tough place. Maybe because of that I have these hard elements. My parents still live in Germany. I grew up there. My mother grew up in Belgium, my grandfather was a miner and I remember the stories he used to tell me."
Dimitris Lalos went on to say that the nice thing about his profession is that he is able to live these different lives for a few moments and revealed that he left the beard just for this role.
Does he consider himself beautiful?
On the admiration he receives and whether he considers himself beautiful, Dimitris Lalos said: "I think that charm is a different thing from fascination. Personality is what brings beauty, beauty. What we are is a field that needs ploughing every day and if you work on your inner self you are also beautiful, presentable. There's a whole industry that exploits a beautiful face and that's enough for it. For myself, I don't think I'm beautiful. The admiration I get now is from all over the spectrum, women, men, children. I met a Roma woman at one point and she says to me, "Are you the Cretan love?" that was the nicest thing I've ever heard. Crete loves me very much. They are waiting for me to go. I don't know if I go what it will be like, but I think they will embrace me. From what I've learned, they consider us their own people."
Competition and ratings
Elsewhere in the interview, the actor mentioned competition and ratings, with him stressing that he's not happy at all when the other shows playing opposite don't do well. "I'm not happy at all when Wild Bees doesn't do well. For me, the ideal would be for us all to be the same. Fiction needs support. Everything has to go well. I'm not happy when something that is opposite and is fiction doesn't do well."
Childhood
"The Greek community abroad is very organized. We are there and we are reliving Greece. Every summer I was in Greece. We waited like hell for school to end so we could go back... It's a different mentality for those who now go abroad of their own free will than the mentality we had when we went as children of immigrants," Dimitris Lalos said, referring to his childhood years.
The relationship with his father
About the relationship with his father, the beloved actor said: "My father is my best friend, my advisor, my father. My parents see Sasmo every day. When I told my father that I wanted to be an actor he said, 'I wanted to be a singer too'. He did want to because he was very good, my grandfather wanted to take him to a conservatory but my grandmother wouldn't let him."
Why he didn't go to an acting school
At another point the TV Mathew explained why he chose not to go to an acting school saying: "I didn't go to a school, it was a conscious decision. I may not have gone to a school but I studied next to Eleni Scoti. It crossed my mind to go to school but because I had my own space, she had a very good teacher and I could work in my own environment I decided to educate myself. My basic training lasted ten years. While I was a professional actor and I was acting, in the morning I went to class."
In fact, Dimitris Lalos revealed that when he was given the Horn Award they had been forced to change the statute since until then this award was only given to actors who had graduated from a school. So in order to give it to him they changed it.
"Like every professional, I dedicate myself to what I do as a champion. I have to keep up to date, to study, to try, to constantly get better," he said at another point and continued by stating humorously. I've booked plans, jobs, everything until 2026."
For Dimitri Lalos, the smartest thing he thinks he has done in his career is the fact that he has taken it seriously.
He also talked about his decision after his role in the film "Calazar" three years ago to stop eating meat while explaining that his life is frugal and although he considers money necessary, he doesn't think it is something that should define our lives.
Complaints and metoo
About the complaints against his fellow directors he said: "For me, the boundaries of severity and brutality are very clear. For a director to be very strict with his actors and torture them to get the result is old school... I want my colleagues to give them light, strength... I was lucky because I grew up in my own theatre, in my own theatre family... As a teacher, because I have a strict personality I always try to be very sweet."
As a father I will make all the mistakes that exist
About his role as a dad he said: "When a child is born and you become a father I think you go through different phases. I see parents who have older children and I say 'what's in store for me.'".... As a father I'm going to make all the mistakes there are. I've started them from day one and I keep making mistakes, it's like I try my best to make mistakes... I try not to give her so many gifts but we make handmade things. I've been an active dad since day one."
While on how he is outside of work, Dimitris Lalos confessed: "In my free time, I'm involved in my work. I love my job, it's also my hobby. When I go on holiday I try to be somewhere where there is no electricity, to tune into nature a bit... I don't watch football, okay when there is a World Cup and the whole world is watching, then I like it. If I swear I do it in the midst of jokes and banter... There's no point in getting angry, banging your fist on the table. The only thing you will achieve is to hit."
