Proceedings continued before Paphos District Court for five fugitives wanted in US fraud case

Proceedings continued before Paphos District Court regarding the extradition request of the five fugitives wanted in the United States of America to face charges of financial fraud amounting to €6.000,000,000 and forgery[/B], offences which are alleged to have been committed on American territory.

At today's hearing, the District Court allowed the American witness to testify, overruling an objection by the Legal Service.

The Court stated in its decision that the objection raised by the prosecution to the witness's testimony was similar to the objection made to the previous witness, a criminal law professor, presented by the defendants and the Court had ruled that he could testify.

It was specifically noted that the preferred testimony of the American witness, an attorney and former assistant district attorney in the District of New York, was relevant to the issues in dispute and should be allowed. The Court also noted that an in-depth assessment of the testimony and whether a witness is an expert would not be made at this stage.

Subsequently, the witness submitted a text and was cross-examined by the representative of the Legal Service, Attorney Eustathios Erotokritou, Attorney of the Republic.

The legality and relevance of the testimony adduced in support of the extradition request and the procedure followed by the US were the main points of his testimony, with the continuation of the proceedings set for tomorrow, Wednesday.
