The death of the Ukrainian negotiator is confirmed Kiev says he is a hero, Russians speak of betrayal They immediately deny rumours that Denis Kireev was executed by Ukrainian secret services There had been intense rumours in recent hours about the circumstances of his death
The death of a member of Ukraine's negotiating team in the first round of talks with Russia has been confirmed by Kiev.
This is Denis Kireev, who - as the Ukrainian Defence Ministry claims - "fell" while performing special duties together with two other members of the Defence Ministry.
"They died defending Ukraine, and their act brings us closer to victory," a statement said, calling them heroes in response to those talking about a Russian agent and his murder by Ukrainian authorities.
Earlier there were rumours, mainly from Russian sources, that Denis Kireev was killed by his compatriots after being accused of committing "high treason".
Indeed, Ukrainian opposition MP Oleksiy Honcharenko reported that Denis Kireev was shot and killed by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) during his arrest, as he was suspected of high treason.
"During his arrest, the Security Service of Ukraine shot and killed the member of the Ukrainian negotiating delegation Denis Kireev. He was suspected of high treason," Honcharenko wrote on his Telegram channel.
The Ukrainian MP claims that the Security Service had clear evidence of Kireev's treason, including telephone conversations.
