[Cyprus Times] Cyprus to become a model of a resilient state, President tells Dubai Business Forum

The vision of the Cyprus Government is to transform Cyprus into a model of a resilient state through a holistic development plan, President Nicos Anastasiades said in his address at the Business Forum, entitled Cyprus: a gateway to the EU, held today at EXPO 2020 in Dubai.

In his address, which was read by Finance Minister Constantinos Petrides, the President of the Republic also noted that the UAE is an important political and economic partner for Cyprus.

He also referred extensively to the Government's reform programme in various sectors, which contributes to the growth of the economy and the enhancement of investment.

He added that over the years Cyprus has evolved into a regional centre for international business and investment.

Making Cyprus the next European business and trade centre is the focus of our efforts, the President said, noting that to achieve this a comprehensive strategy for investment facilitation must be implemented.

During the Forum, the Minister of Finance, Constantinos Petrides, presented during his speech the facts of the Cypriot economy, noting its resilience and how it is based on a balanced growth model.



Mr. Petrides said, among other things, that the growth of the Cypriot economy is not only based on tourism but also on sectors such as shipping, education, the health sector, research and innovation, the financial sector, services and the energy sector.

He underlined that above all we have a vision that is included in our long-term strategy, while he also referred to the benefits of the EU Recovery and Resilience Plan for Cyprus, as well as the tax regime in Cyprus.

A discussion followed with the participation of the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Natasha Pilidou, the Chairman of the Capital Market Commission, George Theocharides, and the Chairman of Invest Cyprus, Yannis Matsis.

There was also a discussion on digitisation and innovation with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Kyriakos Kokkinos, the Chief Scientist, Nicolas Mastrogiannopoulos, and the President of the National Research and Innovation Council, Philip Patsalis.

The Business Forum also included a discussion with foreign investors.
