Cyprus supports the European Universities initiative and encourages the participation of Cypriot universities, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth.
Moreover, according to the statement, the Minister of Education, Prodromos Prodromou, participated yesterday, Tuesday, in the Informal Meeting of Ministers responsible for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, under the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
In the framework of the Summit, the Minister of Education participated in two morning sessions in which French academics spoke about the future of Europe's universities and about the principles and values of research in Europe and in the world.
In the afternoon, the participating Ministers were invited to discuss the issue of strengthening transnational cooperation between universities and the future of Europe.
The Minister of Education, in response to questions, referred to the ways in which "the long-term objective of developing and merging European universities into a university with a pan-European and international dimension" can be achieved.
In particular, he spoke of the need to align national legislation and harmonise national higher education systems with the European Higher Education Area,[/B] calling on Member States to set up national committees for this purpose.
He also underlined the importance of creating a single European system for the evaluation of the curricula of European universities and highlighted the important role of the relevant EU Expert Group in coordinating efforts for a more successful implementation of the strategy for international cooperation.
Mr Prodromou also spoke about the catalytic role played by European University Networks in attracting the best talent and enhancing the competitiveness of European University Institutions.
In conclusion, he mentioned that Cyprus actively supports the institution, by already implementing a funding mechanism for Cypriot Universities that have succeeded in participating in the Networks.
