The Cypriot government must act so that the natural gas fields of the Eastern Mediterranean can be exploited with the support of the European Union, DIKO MEP and member of the Socialists and Democrats group of the European Parliament, Costas Mavridis, said in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
According to a statement from the MEP's press office, in his remarks in Strasbourg regarding the EU's energy security. Mavridis referred to "unprecedented favourable circumstances to be exploited" so that the energy of the Eastern Mediterranean can make a decisive contribution to the prosperity of the peoples of the region as well as to serving the strategic needs of the EU.
In particular, he said that regardless of the outcome of the war in Ukraine and the level of energy prices[/B] already weighing heavily on economies, and in addition to any short-term measures to address the economic and social consequences, the EU now realises that it must immediately accelerate its long-term orientation towards strategic autonomy, he was quoted as saying.
What is the EU's priority now, he added, is to ensure energy security.
"This is what the European Commission as well as the European Parliament are urgently calling for the need to drastically reduce dependence on non-EU sources by diversifying sources and producing energy from energy resources within the EU," he said.
In this new era, he added, the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus are at the centre of attention "and the Cypriot government must act to ensure that the gas fields of the Eastern Mediterranean are exploited through a technically optimal way with the support of the EU."
What is now required, he said, is for the issue to be raised at the next Heads of State Summit under the French Presidency.
