In the context of our search for a future of security and prosperity, especially in our volatile region, Cyprus is strengthening its strategic alliances with partners such as the United Arab Emirates, based on shared values and a collective vision as well as on common interests, President Nicos Anastasiades said in his address during an event at EXPO 2020 in Dubai to mark Cyprus' National Day, which has a pavilion at the exhibition.
President Anastasiades said that it is his sincere belief that the excellent relations between Cyprus and the UAE will continue to prosper and become even stronger in the years to come, to the benefit of the peoples of the two countries as well as peace and stability in the region.
He said the first EXPO in the Middle East and Gulf region is an incredible bridge of cultures and ideas, promoting collective global action in light of the many challenges that need to be addressed and the need to invest in building new synergies in areas such as health emergency response, smart agriculture, food security, cybersecurity, maritime security, climate change and alternative energy.
"It is also a reminder of the Emirates' international standing as a first-class business hub, as well as its contribution to effective multilateralism, evident from the fact that it is now a member of the UN Security Council," he noted.
President Anastasiades said that the close friendship and partnership between Cyprus and the UAE is entering an even more dynamic phase and their ties in a multitude of areas are deepening and expanding rapidly.
He pointed out that this is evidenced by the fact that he is accompanied by nine Ministers as well as the government agency responsible for attracting investment who have already had productive bilateral contacts with their counterparts.
He said the signing of a number of bilateral agreements, the most important being that on Strategic Cooperation, is an obvious example of the commitment to deepen relations at the bilateral, trilateral and multilateral levels.
He also referred to the current business forum involving business people from Cyprus and the UAE, which aims to explore business opportunities and cooperation prospects in a variety of sectors, including renewable energy, tourism, trade, agriculture, shipping, research and development.
For his part, Emirati Minister of Tolerance, Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, in his address at the ceremony said that "we are proud that Cyprus has an active participation in EXPO 2020".
He said that the President's presence at the exhibition reflects the strength of ties between the two countries.
He said that they look forward to working with Cyprus and all their other partners towards collective development and prosperity.
He said that EXPO 2020 is a powerful tool that guides their ambitions to make the world a better place.
He also referred to the importance of Cyprus' geographical position at the crossroads of today's globalised world, he said.
He also said that the Cypriot pavilion at EXPO202020 highlights the opportunities for investment and tourism in the country.
He pointed out that Cyprus and the UAE have relations that extend beyond their diplomatic ties and noted the importance of exploring opportunities for cooperation in areas such as tourism, education and exchanges that will lead to a deep and lasting connection between their peoples.
The event included a programme of Cypriot songs by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.
President Anastasiades then visited the Cypriot pavilion at the exhibition as well as the UAE pavilion.
