Vigilance and calm for earthquakes, recommends the head of the Department of Geological Survey recommends "aftershock activity for at least 2-3 months"

The Deputy Director of the Department of Geological Survey Christodoulos Hadjigeorgiou recommends vigilance and calmness, after the new earthquake that occurred on 23:04 Wednesday night of 5.1 degrees on the Richter scale and in the exact same area where, he said, the earthquake of January 11, 2022 was recorded.

In his statements to CNA Mr. Hadjigeorgiou said that we are in an earthquake-prone area, earthquakes can happen at any time, we cannot predict where they will occur, but he estimated that we should be vigilant and act calmly.

He said, "the aftershock activity that we had estimated could last for at least two to three months is developing," noting that, "this is confirmed by the aftershocks that have occurred."

For the new earthquake, Hatzigeorgiou said that it occurred at 23:04, according to the seismological network of the Department of Geological Survey, with a magnitude of 5.1 degrees on the Richter scale. The earthquake, he continued, was centered in the maritime area of Cyprus, 53 kilometers west-northwest of Polis Chrysochous and had a focal depth of 24 kilometers and was felt in the Paphos province, slightly felt in the Limassol and Nicosia provinces and felt in eastern Cyprus and the southern coast of Turkey.

Asked about this, he said that having regular seismic tremors which are not destructive earthquakes means that it is an indication that energy is being released without giving us big earthquakes, big destructive earthquakes and that is positive.

Regular seismic tremors, Mr. Hadjigeorgiou said, indicate "that the seismic energy is gradually releasing by creating aftershocks," adding that it is not unprecedented to have aftershocks after a main earthquake that was on the order of 6.5 on the Richter scale. We see this in Greece and Turkey and worldwide, he concluded.

It should be noted that yesterday's earthquake is the third earthquake that occurred in a short period of time. On 11/1/22 there was an earthquake of 6.5 degrees on the Richter scale, according to the Department of Geological Survey, while a few days later on 28/1/22 there was an earthquake of 4.5 degrees on the Richter scale.
