The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Anita Demetriou, received on Thursday the Ambassador of Georgia to Cyprus, Temur Kekelidze.
During the meeting, according to a statement of the House of Representatives, the friendly relations between the two countries, based on common principles and values, were underlined. It is these principles and values, the Speaker stressed, that we must preserve in order to be able to deal with the serious challenges that lie ahead of us with unity and collectivity.
Referring to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Ms. Demetriou expressed regret for the lives lost, the miserable living conditions of those who remain and the hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the country for their lives.
Noting the unanimous adoption by the House of Representatives of a resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Ms. Demetriou stressed that Cyprus, being itself a victim of invasion and continued occupation of part of its territory by Turkey, remains firmly committed to international law and respect for human rights, while criticising the failure of the international community to show the same determination towards Turkey.
The Speaker underlined Cyprus' full solidarity with the people of Ukraine, noting the dispatch of humanitarian aid to the country and its readiness to host refugees from Ukraine, despite the serious problems it faces as a result of the disproportionate migratory pressures it faces as a frontline country.
The meeting also underlined the common will to further promote cooperation between Cyprus and Georgia, especially in the parliamentary framework. Demetriou expressed her and the House of Representatives' readiness to promote issues of common interest, through the undertaking of joint initiatives and actions where necessary, the statement concluded.
