The Cyprus Anti-Nuclear Platform warns of danger from nuclear power plants, 11 years after Fukushima "The bell tolls" for the nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, expected to be commissioned in 2023 a "breath" from Cyprus

On the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear power plant[/B] disaster[/B] in Fukushima, on 11 March 2011, the Cyprus Anti-Nuclear Platform warns of the dangers of the nuclear power plant under construction in Akkuyu, Turkey and the war in Ukraine.

As it says in a statement, the nuclear power plant at Akkuyu, expected to be operational in 2023, is very close to Cyprus and the consequences of a failure in the plant's safety systems pose a particularly high risk. In addition, it refers to the political instability in the region, which further increases the risks from a nuclear power plant.

"Even the daily operation of a nuclear power plant poses a risk to humans, aquatic life and the environment in general due to the disposal of radioactive waste and thermal pollution of marine waters."

"Even the daily operation of a nuclear power plant poses a risk to humans, aquatic life and the environment in general due to the disposal of radioactive waste and thermal pollution of marine waters. It is for this reason that the term peaceful use of nuclear energy is meaningless," the statement said.

Furthermore, the risks of a nuclear disaster are underlined by recent developments in Ukraine following the Russian invasion and the fire at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.

The Platform calls on all countries to sign, ratify and fully respect the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

The Cyprus Anti-Nuclear Platform consists of organisations from all over Cyprus. On 27 April, it will organise a major event to mark the 36th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster.
