Dynamic interventions by third countries on Varosha are called for by the Government in a dramatic tone - The situation is extremely critical, the next steps of the international community are decisive - The Turkish side is fully committed to the implementation of the plans - The time has come for action

The Government considers the current situation in Varosha as extremely critical. This is the reason why it was decided to intensify the campaign to promote Anastasiades' proposal for a substantive MEA in all international forums and decision-making centres.

For the Greek Cypriot side the knot has come to the brink and therefore dynamic intervention from the international community is called for to save Famagusta. Officials of the Greek Cypriot side are attempting to mobilise the European and American actors. At this stage, the aim is to put pressure on the Turkish side to stop the course of implementation of the unacceptable plans in the region. It should respect international law and comply with the Security Council resolutions.

To this end, a progress report[/B] has been prepared, which both the President of the Republic and the Foreign Minister have referred to in the cycle of contacts that has been going on for the last month. The informal document has documented all the steps taken by the occupation regime in recent years aimed at the full opening of the enclosed town under Turkish Cypriot administration.

All the events from the decision of the occupiers to set up a team of experts to study the status of the properties in Varosha, in June 2019, until today. Steps accompanied by a series of petitions to the UN, members of the Security Council, the European Union and neighbouring states.

From the other side, Ankara and the pseudo-state appear determined to complete their crime. Because, as they say, the region was lost to the Greek Cypriots with the rejection of the Annan Plan. They erase the negotiations that followed and the submission of the Turkish Cypriot charter, in Geneva, which provided for the return of the city of Famagusta.

They do not intend to back down once they have included the region in their plan for the creation of two separate states in Cyprus. Because there is no longer the slightest doubt that there is a connection between the two.

No more words

It should be noted that the Varosha issue had from the beginning brought much stronger reactions compared to the Turkish provocations in the EEZ. For example, the Turkish moves were unequivocally condemned by the UN Security Council in Presidential Statements. With the exception of the UK, similar reactions have been made individually by the permanent members of the Security Council. As well as from the European Union.

Yet the development of events has shown that all these reactions were not enough to convince the Turkish side to abandon its provocations and return the area to its rightful owners and inhabitants. This concern is growing month by month, as Ankara and the occupied territories have shown that they do not understand words.

As worrying as the possibility of sanctions is, the international community must realise that there is a serious risk of a consolidation of the fait accompli. A fait accompli that goes beyond the geographical limits of Famagusta, as it completely prevents any effort to resume talks to find a viable solution for all Cypriots.
