Talks with a view to a diplomatic resolution of the crisis after Moscow announced the withdrawal of troops from the border with Ukraine
With the mutual shots and the war of statements continuing, efforts are being made by Western leaders to find common ground with the Kremlin and make a de-escalation of the crisis on the Russian-Ukrainian border visible.
French President Emmanuel Macron, after his visit to Moscow and talks with Vladimir Putin during which he focused on the need to implement diplomacy, will speak again by phone today with his US counterpart Joe Biden, hours after Russia ordered some units deployed near the border with Ukraine to return to their barracks.
The two leaders will exchange views, Elise said, as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is in Moscow for talks with Vladimir Putin aimed at de-escalating tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, some Russian troops deployed near the Ukrainian border are returning to their bases, according to Moscow. Russian troops will return to their bases after completing their exercises and units in Russia's southern and western military regions have already started loading their equipment for their departure, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said Tuesday.
The start of the withdrawal was also confirmed by the Kremlin, calling it a "normal process" and denouncing Western "hysteria" about an alleged imminent invasion of that country by Moscow. "We have always said that after the completion of the exercises, () the troops would return to their bases. That is what is happening here, it is the usual procedure," he told reporters."
