The President of Ukraine asked the UN Security Council to condemn the Russian attacks Protest by Russia's ambassador to the UN

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, yesterday Wednesday appealed to the UN Security Council to take action to stop Russian missile attacks on vital energy infrastructure, which have plunged many Ukrainian cities back into darkness amidst freezing temperatures.

He asked the UN Security Council to condemn Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which is unlikely to happen given that Russia is a permanent veto-wielding member.

A "terrorist state" cannot participate in UN Security Council votes, said the Ukrainian president, who invited a UN delegation to Ukraine to see the damage to energy infrastructure caused by Russian attacks.

After accusing Moscow of energy instrumentalization, the Ukrainian President said that "the UN can change this situation in order not to be hostage to an international terrorist of Russia."

Zelensky stressed that because of Russian missile attacks on energy infrastructure in his country, not only Ukrainians, but also residents of neighboring countries are suffering. When the mercury drops below zero and tens of millions of people are left without electricity, heating and water, this amounts to a "weapon of mass destruction, an obvious crime against humanity," the Ukrainian president said.

Protest by Russia's ambassador to the UN

Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, expressed his protest against the Ukrainian president's appearance via video link at the Security Council, which he said was against the rules. He also dismissed "reckless threats and ultimatums" from Ukraine and its allies.

Nebenzia claimed that damage to Ukrainian infrastructure was caused by Ukrainian anti-aircraft missiles and called for the West to stop arming Kiev.
