Downward trajectory of Covid cases in the UK confirmed despite almost 100,000 cases

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK reached 94,432 on Tuesday.

Despite the still high net number, the report represents a decrease of 22% compared to last Tuesday.

Overall over the last seven days, cases are down 39% on the previous corresponding period.

It is also the first time since 23 December that the average daily case count for the week is below 100,000.

Too high, however, is the death toll for Tuesday, which stood at 438. A total of 152,513 deaths have now been recorded in the UK within 28 days of a positive coronavirus diagnosis.

In terms of hospitalisations, there was a slight increase in Covid patients in hospital beds. There are now 19,450. Of these, 713 require mechanical ventilatory support, a number down on last July's levels.

The third dose of the coronavirus vaccine has now been administered to over 36.5 million citizens, i.e. 63.6% of the population aged 12 and over.
