[CYPRUS TIMES] Coronavirus: the missing vitamin for the seriously ill

Deficiency of a particular vitamin appears to put the body at risk of more severe disease, according to a new Israeli study

Israeli researchers claim to have discovered a key "difference" between people who become seriously ill with Covid-19 infection and those who have mild symptoms.

According to a study published in PLOS One, about half of the people who were vitamin D deficient before becoming sick with Covid-19 developed a severe infection, compared to less than 10% of those who were deficient in the vitamin in their blood.

Vitamin D is known to be vital for our bone health and for its protective role against severe Covid-19.

The Israeli study is the first to investigate the correlation between pre-disease levels of this vitamin and the progression of the condition after someone has contracted coronavirus.

"It is remarkable the differences we found in terms of vitamin D deficiency in severely ill people," Dr. Amiel Dror, study author and pathologist at the Galilee Medical Center, commented in a statement to the Times of Israel.

The scientists focused on 253 people who were admitted to the medical center between April 7, 2020 and February 4, 2021, before the Omicron mutation occurred.

Processing various factors revealed that vitamin D helps the immune system handle respiratory attacks from various viruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

"The study does not prove that vitamin D protects against Covid-19 and does not give the green light to avoid vaccines and switch to vitamins. Vaccines are the ones that reduce the risk of hospitalisation by up to 90% especially in the case of the booster dose," Dror underlines.

It is worth noting that the findings of this study are identical to those of another similar study published in The Lancet before the Covid-19 pandemic that found that vitamin D reduces the risk of respiratory infections compared to placebo.

Vitamin D is produced by the human body when exposed to sunlight, but is also found in smaller amounts in oily fish, mushrooms, egg yolks and of course in dietary supplements.

Vitamin D sufficiency is considered to be present when levels are above 20 nanograms per millilitre.
