[BR]The US Congress is close to agreement on a bill providing for new economic sanctions against Russia, Democratic Senator Bob Menendez said today, promising serious consequences for Moscow if it invades Ukraine.
When asked by the CNN network about the work being done by Democrats and Republicans to decide on new sanctions against Moscow, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said: we are one measure off the mark, and I hope we get there successfully.
There is undoubtedly an incredible determination in both parties to support Ukraine ... and that there will be serious consequences for Russia if it invades, he said.
We cannot have a new Munich, Menendez also said, referring to the 1938 conference and agreements between Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime and Britain and France that failed to prevent the outbreak of World War II.
Republican Senator Jim Rich, who spoke in the same CNN interview, took the same position as the Democratic congressman, describing the 24/7 efforts of members of both parties in recent days to reach consensus.
Despite their apparent unity on the substance of the sanctions against Russia, Republicans and Democrats, on the other hand, are more divided on the issue of when they should take effect.
The former are in favor of pre-emptive anti-invasion measures, while the latter want to keep these sanctions as a sword of Damocles to fall in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine.
According to Democrat Bob Menendez, some sanctions could be implemented initially because of what Russia has already done, citing in particular the cyber attacks in Ukraine and the campaign to undermine the Ukrainian government internationally. But, he continued, the devastating sanctions that would crush Russia will come when (Vladimir Putin) invades.
