Improved proposal for Akamas management plan, ask community leaders
Improved proposal for the Akamas management plan, ask affected communities.
From the local plan as it has evolved and after the last meeting they had in the Druze community with the relevant ministers and with all the State agencies involved, it appeared that they just confirmed that they have satisfied all the communities by 75%-80% except the community of Ineia, said the chairman of the Ineia Community Council, Yagos Jivicos. Tzivikos told CNA that although President Nicos Anastasiades' instructions were to satisfy most of the communities' requests, it appeared that they ignored one community which has more than 30 thousand stairs of private land and more than 50- 60 thousand owners.
He said, "they may see that there were seven communities in Akama, but as it was only apparent in the community of Inia, they are projecting protection everywhere, both near the community and near the beaches."
He added that in this regard, he has also sent a letter to the President of the Republic. Inia, he added, "as the largest of the communities in Akamas, covering 30,000 scales of private land, excluding forest land, is a special case, since all the property of its residents was affected by the 1989 decree, which prohibited any development within private lands." He said he also asked the President not to announce the Akamas Local Plan, expected in March, until the two Ministers of Interior and Agriculture come back with the agencies involved with an improved proposal to the community of Inia.
He also said the only proposal they had for the community of Inia was to give it 100 stairs on the outskirts of the community, 8 kilometres away from the sea and beaches for tourism development. Unfortunately he said Mr Chivikos has indicated that he cannot accept such a proposal over such a large area and with so many large landowners affected. As residents of Akamas, the community leader of Ineia continued, " we are the first to wish that the environment is not destroyed", especially with climate change and the destruction of nature being the biggest challenges facing humanity.
What we are asking for, he continued, is to find the common ground to protect the environment, but at the same time for people to survive. We are demanding a better future for us and our children, who want to stay and work in their place, but instead are forced to leave it, he concluded.
Neo Horio
Moreover, the community mayor of Neo Horio Andreas Christodoulou (Mahimos) told KYPE that since the meeting had been held in Druscia they have no information.
According to the community leader, the prosperity of the communities of Akamas, especially those in remote areas, is impossible to achieve without linking them to coastal development or some major development that will create jobs and give a real boost to the local economy.
Akamas, he continued, is one of the most underprivileged areas of the island. Nowhere else in Cyprus are the residents of an area denied the opportunity to use or even mortgage their properties because of the zero building rate, he observed. He added that without the possibility of development, without the possibility of using the land, it is obviously practically impossible for any community to prosper, he concluded.
Kathikas
The official publication of the Local Plan of Akamas in March is expected by the community of Kathikas, according to the chairman of the K.C. Menelaos Turvas. In a statement to CNA, Mr. Turvas said that Kathikas is the community most affected of all communities in terms of private properties. Referring to the impact of the communities, Mr. Turvas said that 54% of the communities were affected, 54% were affected by Kathikas, 34% by Inia, 25% by Pegeia, 20% by Druscia and 15% by Neo Horio.
As a compensation, he said, "for those residents whose plots are inside Akamas, we asked for a resort, with 10% residential building," but they replied that unfortunately the birds are passing by, he concluded.
