EU message to Russia It will face the toughest sanctions we have ever imposed

A clear message to Russia was sent by the European Commission as President Ursula von der Leyen and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borel, stressed in statements from Brussels that Moscow will face the toughest sanctions ever imposed by the EU.

"We condemn the cynical arguments used by President Putin. It is he who is bringing war back to Europe. The EU stands by the Ukrainian citizens in this unprecedented pressure exerted by Russia against an independent country. Putin's goal is not Donbas and Ukraine, but stability in Europe and internationally."

Russian forces invaded Ukraine, a free and sovereign country.

We condemn this barbaric attack, and the cynical arguments used to justify it.

Later today we will present a package of massive, targeted sanctions.

According to her, the EU will impose huge sanctions with a package targeting strategic targets of the Russian economy by blocking Moscow's access to key sectors of its economy, while also freezing Russian assets in the EU and blocking Russian banks' access to financial markets

"We are working with our allies in the US and Canada, but also with Japan and Australia to stop war funding," said President von der Leyen, saying Putin wants to turn back the clock on the Russian empire

For his part, Josep Borel said it was one of the darkest moments in Europe since World War II as a nuclear power invaded a neighbouring country and stressed that the 27 EU leaders would agree on the toughest sanctions we have ever imposed as an EU.
