SPOLMIK's concern about the safety of old buildings in case of earthquake

Its concern regarding the structural adequacy and safety of old buildings in our country, in the event of a similar and/or increased seismic activity, is expressed by the Cyprus Civil Engineers' Association (CPCO), on the occasion of the strong earthquake that was felt on our island in the morning hours.

In a statement, it says that the old age of many buildings in our country, the absence of a culture of maintenance, and the fact that a large number of them were designed and constructed before the implementation of the Cyprus Earthquake Regulation in 1994, significantly increases their risk of seismic activity.

Given that Cyprus is frequently affected by earthquakes, catastrophic or not, the Civil Engineers sound the alarm and reiterate the immediate need for the legislative regulation of the Regular Inspection of Buildings and the issuance of the relevant Certificate, as a preventive measure to avoid catastrophic events.

In addition, SPOLMIK calls on the state to proceed with the preparation of grant plans for the inspection of structural adequacy and for the seismic upgrading of old buildings, giving priority to buildings for public use.
