Citizens' Initiative appeals to the Parliament for the merger of Aradippou Larnaca What they say in a press release

Appeal to the House of Representatives to take into account all factors and parameters for the merger of Aradippou Municipality with the Municipalities of Larnaca and Livadia and the Community of Oroklini, addressed today by the Citizens' Initiative - Unification - Aradippou Larnaca.

In a press release of the Citizens' Initiative - Aradippou-Larnaca Unification on the occasion of a press conference held this afternoon, it is stated that "our various concerns and questions, as well as the facts before us, have led us to agree with the proposal for the unification of Aradippou Municipality with the Municipalities of Larnaca, Livadia and Oroklini Community, which we consider to be the most appropriate option".

"Before reaching our opinion, we took into account the only proposal submitted to the Interior Committee of the Parliament by the Ministry of Interior, which provides for the merger of Aradippou Municipality with the Municipalities of Larnaca, Livadia and Oroklini Community, a proposal that is the product of a study based on all relevant factors and data," it adds.

Unfortunately, it is reported, "during the last meeting of the Interior Committee of the Parliament, a proposal for the merger of Aradippou-Troulloi-Kellia was submitted, overturning the data before the members of the Committee. This proposal was tabled on the last day and we consider it important that this proposal was formulated by a majority, and not unanimously, within the Interior Committee of the Parliament."

As citizens it is noted "we are particularly concerned, as this proposal since its submission remains undocumented, without serious arguments and not based on any substantial study that can guarantee its viability."

As citizens it is noted "we are particularly concerned, as this proposal since its submission remains undocumented, without serious arguments and not based on any substantial study that can guarantee its viability. Also, despite any notes and footnotes that had been created from time to time in the proposals under preparation by the Ministry of Interior, regarding the future of Aradippou Municipality, none, none at all, envisaged its amalgamation exclusively with the communities of Troullo and Kellion".

In the press release, the Initiative notes that it has "strong and legitimate concerns, since this proposal has no documentation and is not based on a specific study, therefore it seems to serve the interests of certain local actors and personalities".

"We are saddened by the fact that the Interior Committee, instead of setting as a basic parameter the viability of a new municipality resulting from the Reform, is influenced by alien motives and takes decisions that serve individual persons and interests, to the detriment of the substance of the Reform itself, to the detriment of citizens and to the detriment of the State," it says, among other things.

The Initiative appeals "to the Plenum of the Parliament to take into account all factors and parameters as well as the fact that a proposal has already been submitted to the Parliamentary Committee on Internal Affairs by the Ministry of Interior on the basis of a scientific study".

The position is expressed that "any different proposal lacks the required seriousness and documentation and we demand from the elected representatives of the people, to put above all the interests of the citizens, the citizens of Aradippou, the State and the Republic and not the party, personal, micro-political and other interests".

As citizens, it adds, "we consider necessary and imperative the need for reform of the Local Government in order to strengthen its role with the citizens themselves as the main focus. Despite the fact that the Initiative has sent a letter to all parties involved, namely the Ministry of Interior, party leaders, Larnaca MPs and locally elected representatives, we have received no response and no public position on our questions."
