The French aircraft carrier Charles-de-Gaulle will set sail for the Mediterranean next month to take part in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly announced on Thursday.

The aircraft carrier Charles-de-Gaulle and its aeronautical escort are going out to sea again in early February: in this mission, called Clemenceau 2022, it will mainly participate in Operation Inherent Resolve against Daesh (Islamic State) in the Levant, Parly said via Twitter.

The minister added that this extraordinary instrument of power and influence will also participate in several exercises, in collaboration with the Navy of various partners of France, and will contribute to our autonomous assessment of the situation, which is essential for a power like France.

Around a quarter of the world's maritime trade passes through the Mediterranean, recalled Admiral Gilles Boadevezy, the head of the Mediterranean maritime zone, at a press conference.

In Libya, some militias are trafficking arms to the Sahel as well as people to Europe, he commented.
