The mayor of Chalkida sued the journalist for slander He was arrested and detained

A journalist was arrested and detained in Chalkida Security because he published a video of the Municipal Council in which the mayor of Chalkida Elena Vaka is seen drinking whiskey. The mayor filed a complaint against Evia Zoom journalist Michalis Toskanis for libel. The journalist told protothema.gr that on Saturday he was visited by an off-duty police officer who informed him that he had to drive him to the department to give some explanations.

"He told me that it was better to do this in his private car so as not to give a target to the neighborhood. I followed him and when we arrived at the station I was informed that I was under arrest for the lawsuit filed against me by the mayor of Halkida," says Michael Toscanis. The paradox is that the journalist who walked through the door of the prosecutor on duty today, who had the discretion to release him until his plea, instead ordered his continued detention until Monday until the self-incrimination procedure is completed.

"It is unacceptable that a journalist, who was only doing his job properly, is arrested under the self-incrimination procedure and detained at the station by decision/option of the public prosecutor , on the charge of slander. On the contrary, those against whom the journalist in question exercised the remedies provided for by the law were not subjected to an autopsy and are not detained because of their status as municipal officials. The strictness of the system on my client was exhausted in this case, while the other side remains unscathed, said his lawyer Christina Florou.
