Kasoulides will meet with Borel on Monday, according to a community source
Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides will meet with the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy on Monday in Brussels, according to a Community official who confirmed the information during a briefing for correspondents ahead of the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council.
The official said that Mr. Borel is due to meet with Mr. Kasoulides on Monday, and noted that it will also be a "meeting between friends" as they have known each other for 25 years from their terms in the European Parliament.
Recall that Mr. Borel was President of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2007 and an MEP until 2009, while Mr. Kasoulides was an MEP for two terms from 2004 to 2013.
This is the first official meeting between the Foreign Ministry and Mr. Borel since Mr. Kasoulides took over the ministry.
On the issue of possible sanctions against Russia regarding its aggressive actions against Ukraine, the official noted that although there is consensus among the leaders on the package of measures (on which they were briefed by the Commission on Thursday during the informal meeting of the European Council), their adoption is not foreseen at the Foreign Ministers' meeting on Monday, unless there is a new aggressive move on the part of Turkey.
However, he pointed out, as there is consensus, it is expected that if necessary a decision on implementation can be taken without delay.
On other issues, the EU official, asked about Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu's statements on the Greek islands, referred to the relevant Commission statement and reiterated that the issue of sovereignty over these islands is not even a matter for discussion.
On the agenda of the Foreign Affairs Council will be the latest developments on Ukraine's borders with Russia and Belarus, the concentration of Russian troops as well as developments in Belarus and the broader security situation in Europe.
Foreign Ministers will have a working breakfast with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
Foreign Ministers will also exchange views on EU climate diplomacy, on which they are expected to issue conclusions.
Also on the agenda is the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the secessionist movements in the Republic of Srpska will be discussed.
The ministers will also be briefed on the situation in Mali, while the meeting will conclude with a cyber security exercise organised by the High Representative in cooperation with the French Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Finally, the 26th EU Gulf Cooperation Council ministerial meeting will take place in the margins of the Foreign Affairs Council.
