The position that it is Cyprus' obligation to support the political decisions of the European Union against Russia, expressed in a written statement on Tuesday, February 22, the President of the Democratic Party, Marios Karoyan.

According to the Limassol MP of the Democratic Party of Cyprus, "the Republic of Cyprus cannot afford to differentiate, on a case-by-case basis, with regard to respect for international law, the sovereignty and inviolability of the borders of states, and the protection of human rights", adding that "despite the EU's two-stop-shop policy towards Turkey and Russia for related violations of international law, we have an obligation as a Member State to support the EU's political decisions to impose sanctions against Russia".

Karoyan concluded by noting that with developments in Ukraine running at high speed and the NATO-Russia confrontation after Russia's illegal recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions coming to a head, "vigilance, readiness and quick reflexes" are required, stressing that "we have a greater obligation to protect the national, political and economic interests of the Republic of Cyprus in the new Cold War environment that is being created".
