Concern over the spread of the Omicron mutation has been expressed by top US epidemiologist and White House adviser Anthony Fauci, who urged Americans to cancel parties planned for New Year's Eve.

"I've consistently told people that if you're vaccinated and on the booster dose and you have a family gathering at home with family and relatives," it's OK. "But when you talk about a party on New Year's Eve, we have 30, 40, 50 people celebrating. You don't know what their vaccination status is. I would recommend staying away from that this year," he added.
At the same time, state and local officials are urging Americans to avoid unvaccinated family members for Christmas and to cancel planned gatherings.
