Unfortunately, developments in Famagusta, instead of a solution, are bringing the partition even closer, said AKEL MP Nikos Kettiros, speaking during the debate on the 2022 State Budget by the Plenary of the Parliament

"The illegal and reprehensible action of Turkey and its accomplice in the occupied territories to open up part of our city, thus launching its colonisation, is a stab in our heart, a stab in the heart of every Cypriot. AKEL has been warning for 3 years. Unfortunately, we were never listened to. Those in power were content with communicative management for internal consumption," he added.

"The government settlements emanate an image of abandonment with aging apartment buildings in urgent need of reconstruction, public spaces in a deplorable state and elderly refugees remaining for years trapped and helpless on the floors of prison buildings without elevators. The inefficiency of the government in the issue of maintenance of government settlements is reflected in the tragic implementation of the relevant budget, which - in some years - barely reaches almost 40%," he added.

He noted that the issue of rebuilding the dangerous apartment buildings is going back and forth to the Refugee Commission, but the residents of the 43 apartment buildings found to have serious structural problems have not yet been informed and no decision has yet been made whether they will be rebuilt or whether they and the refugees living in them will also be left to their fate.

"With regard to the war dead and disabled who sacrificed their limbs for the democracy and independence of our country, despite constant pressure from the Refugee Commission, the Ministry of Finance refuses to acknowledge the increased needs they face. The issue will come back to the Commission on January 11 and I hope that after the public outcry, the Ministry will have second thoughts," he added.

On the issue of missing persons in Cyprus, Kettiros said that the Government should also take action.
