Preparations for Western "high-risk" Zelensky rescue operation revealed by British newspapers More than 70 British SAS commandos and 150 US Marines are training at a remote military base in Lithuania
More than70 British Special Forces SAS commandos and 150 US Marines are training at a remote military base in Lithuania, alongside select members of the Ukrainian special forces for a possible operation to rescue President Zelensky from Kiev, the British Express and Sun newspapers claim.
The operation is described as "high-risk" by the newspapers' sources, who stress that the mission will only be carried out if requested by the Ukrainian president himself, who, however, has already rejected a US proposal.
According to Express, the operation will include the rescue of the Ukrainian President's family and members of his government.
Among the methods of Mr Zelensky's escape being considered are reportedly the use of a Chinook or Osprey V-22 transport helicopter, while a Russian Mi-8 helicopter, which has fallen into the hands of Ukrainian forces, may be used for additional security purposes.
It should be noted that according to the Times, there have already been at least three attempts to assassinate Volodymyr Zelensky, two by mercenaries from the private Wagner group and one by Chechen gunmen who have entered Ukrainian territory.
