Boris Johnson has "submitted himself to an investigation" by senior state official Sue Gray into the Downing Street parties amid a lockdown, Education Secretary Nadeem Zahawi has said, confirming a Telegraph report.

The UK Prime Minister is under pressure from revelations of multiple parties, with six of his Conservative Party MPs having publicly backed his resignation and polls giving Labour a ten-point lead.

Mr. Zahawi, as Mr. Johnson and other ministers have done, recommended patience until the inquiry's conclusion. "You don't convict a man without a thorough investigation," the British education secretary told Sky News. Ms Gray is expected to complete the inquiry this week or next week.

Nadim Zahawi also dismissed a claim by a well-known Sunday Times columnist that two Downing Street officials had warned the Prime Minister that the May 20, 2020 drinks gathering in the garden of the Prime Minister's office,[/B] to which staff had been invited by his private secretary, Mr. Johnson's private secretary, was a party and had to be cancelled.

Mr. Johnson admitted in the House that he attended that meeting and apologised, but said he thought it was a working meeting.

Both Mr Zahawi and a Downing Street spokesman said it was untrue that the Prime Minister had been warned before the event.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror reveals that Boris Johnson briefly attended and made a short speech at a farewell gathering in Downing Street for his defence adviser Captain Steve Highham. The small gathering took place just before Christmas 2020, when indoor gatherings were banned.
