[BR]Novak Djokovic has arrived in Australia but there are problems with his visa, to the point where the world number one in tennis is blocked and waiting to find out what will happen in the next few hours.
The Serb landed at Tullamarine Melbourne International Airport at 23:30 local time (14:30 Cyprus time) but is facing a long night after authorities were alerted to a wrong visa presented by the player's team.
The tweet posted by Jalaah Palford, the state of Victoria's interim sports minister, stated that "the Federal Government has asked if we will support Novak Djokovic's visa application to enter Australia. We will not provide Novak Djokovic with support for an individual visa application to participate in the 2022 Australian Open. We have always been clear on two points: visa approval is a matter for the federal government and medical exemptions are a matter for doctors."
As such, the Victorian authorities themselves - as the Minister stated - have refused to support the tennis player's visa application. According to Australian newspaper The Age, the world's No. 1 tennis player was questioned by Australian Border Force officials in an airport room until at least 1:15 a.m. local time.
And the questions were about the documentation for the exemption request, which was not sufficient: it is not clear whether a COVID-19 infection in the past six months that is suspected to warrant the player's exemption is sufficient to warrant entry into Australia, according to federal guidelines.
