The Biden administration plans to impose new sanctions on Russian oligarchs and their family members within the next few hours, sources familiar with the matter told US network CNN.
The sanctions are expected to be broadly similar to those imposed by the European Union on oligarchs earlier this week, meaning some of the individuals will be the same, though not identical, the official commented.
The US package, however, will be more extensive, as it will include travel bans and family members of the oligarchs.
Biden has already imposed sanctions on some top Russians close to the Kremlin, along with their adult children. He has pledged to go after the "ill-gotten gains" of Russian oligarchs, including their private jets, luxury apartments and yachts.
The White House comments that the sanctions on Russian oligarchs are intended to put pressure on President Vladimir Putin and that Thursday's list of names will not be the last.
"One of the big factors we're looking at is the proximity (of the oligarchs) to President Putin," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said when asked how the US chose whom to sanction. "We want them to feel the pressure, we want the people around him to feel the pressure," she said."
