[B-4]The Berlin Court of Appeal today sentenced 56-year-old Vadim Krajikov to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of Zelimkhan Kangosvili, a Georgian from Chechnya, in the Tiergarten park in central Berlin. The court has no doubt that the murder was carried out on behalf of the Russian secret service FSB. "He received a government order to kill," the German prosecutor said, referring to political motives and a "state order to kill on German soil."[B-5][B-6]At noon on 23 August 2019, 40-year-old Kangosvili, who had taken part as a ranksman in the Second Chechen War and used the pseudonym Tornike Kaftarasvili, was walking in Tiergartren Park, a central and busy part of the German capital, when he was shot in the back by a cyclist, who shot him twice more while he was already on the ground. Kangosvili died on the spot and Krzyzykov was arrested shortly afterwards by the German authorities, claiming to be Vadim Sokolov, a civil engineer with no connection to the Russian state, a claim his defence insisted on to the end.[B-7][B-8]The victim had sought asylum from Germany in 2016, as he was classified as a "high-value target" for the Russian services, who considered him a terrorist and accused him of being a member of the Caucasus Emirate.[B-9][B-10]Russian President Vladimir Putin himself had described Kangashvili as a "bandit" and "assassin."[B-11][B-12]The assassination caused great tension in Berlin-Moscow relations from the beginning, as the first statement by the German prosecutor's office referred to political motives and the perpetrator's connection to the Russian secret services, calling for Russia's assistance in the investigation.
