The judge ordered his transfer to a local juvenile institution, according to the Belgian prosecutor's office

A 12-year-old teenager has been detained since today in an institution for juvenile offenders in Belgium, after seriously wounding a police officer with a knife during an altercation near a school, the Limburg prosecutor's office said.

The day after the attack, which occurred in Per, in the province of Limburg (northeastern Belgium), the boy was brought before a juvenile judge this afternoon on charges of "attempted manslaughter," according to the same source. The judge decided to transfer him to an institution for minors in the area, the prosecutor's office explained in a press release.

The attack, which was recorded from afar by a passerby, was committed yesterday afternoon near a school complex when a conversation between two brothers, their mother and a traffic warden turned into an argument. It was over a dispute they had about traffic, according to initial reports.

In the footage broadcast by the VRT television network, the traffic policeman in the orange vest can be seen being caught in the arms of the older brother, aged 17, who is trying to escape, while the younger brother suddenly starts stabbing him in the back, while the mother watches the scene.

According to investigators, the 12-year-old stabbed at least twice in the back the police officer, who was seriously injured but his life is not in danger. The trooper will need to stay in hospital for a dozen days, a spokesman for the police department of the city of Kabeneland, where he belongs, told Agence France-Presse.

Mother and sons were soon brought in after the attack. The mother was released after being questioned by police, but "investigations are continuing," prosecutor's office spokesman Bruno Coppin explained.
