Beijing[/B] called for direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in a telephone conversation earlier today between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his US counterpart Anthony Blinken.
"We encourage direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine," said the statement issued by China's Foreign Ministry.
"We hope that the fighting will stop as soon as possible (...) and a major humanitarian crisis will be prevented," Wang said, admitting that negotiations will be difficult.
This was the first telephone conversation between the two ministers since February 24.
Blinken told Wang that the world is "watching to see which countries are standing up for the fundamental principles of freedom, self-determination and national sovereignty," according to State Department spokesman Ned Price.
