"Port for port and not Varosha", says Ozersai on the MoU - "The proposal of the Greek side is of course not acceptable in its current form"

The proposal of the Greek side, which has not yet been officially communicated to the T/C side, is of course not acceptable in its existing form, CL Chairman Kudret Ozersai said, advocating the opening of the Famagusta port "against a port and not Varosha".

The "presidency", he said, on behalf of the T/C side should engage in proactive diplomacy and take the initiative on this issue, formulating a balanced and fair position/MOE, taking into account the interests of the T/C "people".

Speaking on a Haber Kipris webcast, Mr. Ozersai said that for an MOU to be balanced and fair, it should not be Varosha that will be returned against the port of Famagusta, but a port.

In the 1990s, he said, an MOU was created linking Varosha to Nicosia Airport, but now the circumstances have changed regarding both Varosha and the airport, he added.

There should be such an MOU that creates between similar elements, Ozersai said. "That is why putting Varosha under UN control, in this package, is neither reasonable nor practical in today's changing circumstances. On the contrary, in exchange for the openings to the port of Famagusta and Erztyan (SS: meaning the illegal airport of Tympos), the opening of some of the Turkish ports and airports to Greek Cypriot ships and planes and the opening of Turkish airspace can be considered."

Ozersai also believes it would be more appropriate not to open the port of Famagusta under EU control, but to apply some European standards to the port. The same, he added, should apply to the illegal airport of Tympou.

The Greek side, he continued, saw that it would not be successful by imposing sanctions on Turkey for opening Varosha and decided to change its policy in this regard. However, confidence-building measures can be used not to "beat" each other, but to improve relations and build mutual trust between the two sides, he said. "The E/C side should know that it will not use MOUs to inactivate the initiative to open Varosha. Because the success of such measures is possible only with mutual goodwill."

It is Tatar's task, he added, to find measures in favour of the TCs against the proposals of the E/C side. Proactive diplomacy is needed, he said.
