Severe weather has upgraded the warning to orange The forecast from the Met Office
An orange warning for severe weather has been issued by the Met Office, at a time when problems are being experienced across Cyprus due to bad weather.
According to the Met Office, the orange warning comes into effect immediately and will remain in force until 17.00 in the afternoon of New Year's Eve.
It is recalled that the Meteorological Service had initially issued a yellow warning but the severe weather conditions led to its upgrade to orange.

Forecast from the Met Office:
A barometric low, between Rhodes and Crete, is moving slowly southwards and will affect the Cyprus area until Friday afternoon.
Tonight, the weather will remain mainly cloudy, with intermittent showers and isolated thunderstorms. Locally, the phenomena are expected to be prolonged or intense. Snow or sleet is expected on the higher peaks of the Troodos. Winds will be mainly easterly to south-easterly, moderate and locally strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. Locally, especially on the offshore west and north coasts, winds will be very strong, 6 Beaufort. The sea will be choppy, and in the windward parts up to choppy. Temperatures will drop to around 8 degrees inland, around 15 degrees on the west coast, around 13 degrees on the rest of the coast and around 3 degrees in the higher mountains, where frost is expected to form locally.
Tomorrow the weather will be mainly cloudy, with intermittent showers and isolated thunderstorms. Locally the phenomena are expected to be prolonged or intense. Snow or sleet is expected on the higher peaks of the Troodos and later sleet. A noticeable improvement in the weather is expected from late afternoon. Winds will be east to southeast, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and locally in the west and north up to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be rough to choppy. The temperature will rise to around 15 degrees in the interior, around 18 degrees on the coast and around 6 degrees in the higher mountains.
Tomorrow evening the weather will be mainly clear, but there will be occasional clouds. Winds will be mainly northeast to southeast, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort, but up to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort on the offshore. On Saturday, New Year's Day, Sunday and Monday, the weather will be mainly clear, but occasionally there will be local clouds.
Temperatures will rise slightly on Saturday, then remain at the same levels thereafter, which will be close to or slightly above average.
The snow depth at Troodos Square, at the time of writing, was 17 cm.
