An explosion occurred at a nightclub in the early hours of today in the capital Baku, resulting in a fire that killed one person and injured 31, according to the Associated Press.
The explosion is believed to have been caused by a gas leak and an investigation is under way, AP reported, citing an Interior Ministry spokesman. Rescuers at the scene are trying to locate victims and bodily remains under the wreckage, authorities said.
"According to preliminary information, people were killed and injured in the crash," the Emergency Ministry said in a statement posted on its website.
The ministry said it "received information (about) an explosion at a facility on Tarlan Aliyarbayov Street" in Baku at 03:00 am Sunday morning local time (02:00 GMT).
Photos showing rescuers digging through the wreckage of the building were posted on the ministry's website.
"Very sad news of casualties as a result of explosion at club in downtown Baku," U.S. Ambassador Kazar Ibrahim tweeted. "Condolences and prayers."
24 of the injured were taken to a hospital, most with burns, a health ministry spokesman said, according to AP.
The ministry added that the fire at the nightclub was extinguished before it could spread.
