Door maintenance issue investigated by authorities after Bronx tragedy
New York City authorities are investigating a possible maintenance issue with a door that failed to close when a fire broke out in a Bronx apartment building yesterday, killing 19 people, including 9 children.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who has been in office for a week, is expected to provide more details later today about the fire, which broke out yesterday morning at the 19-storyTwin Parks North West building, which offers affordable apartments to low-income New Yorkers.
Many of the tenants are of Gambian descent.
Earlier today, on Good Morning America, Adams said the smoke from the fire was able to spread because of a door that had been left open. The doors to the apartments in the building are supposed to close automatically to prevent the fire from spreading to the rest of the building. There was a maintenance issue with that door and that will be part of the ongoing investigation, Adams said.
All will be revealed during the investigation. About 60 people were injured in the fire and 32 people are being treated for life-threatening burns, officials said yesterday.
Firefighters determined, through collecting evidence from the scene of the tragedy and testimony from residents, that the fire started from an electric stove in an apartment bedroom, explained city fire chief Daniel Nigro.
According to him, the heating was on in the building and the stove was being used for more heat. About 200 firefighters helped put out the fire. In many of them, the oxygen tanks were empty, Adams noted today. But instead of turning back and exiting the building, they kept moving through the smoke.
