Inappropriate products identified in the market Recommendations by the Labour Inspection Department

In the framework of the implementation of the Chemical Substances Legislation, the Labour Inspection Department of the Ministry of Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance carried out sample checks on plastic articles placed on the Cypriot market, in order to determine their content of hazardous chemicals and in particular Phthalic Esters.

After laboratory analysis of the samples carried out by the State General Chemistry Department, it was found that Phthalic Esters were detected in the products shown in the table in concentrations higher than the maximum limit allowed by law.

Phthalic Esters are substances classified as toxic for reproduction and are included in the restrictions of Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (points 51 and 52). According to these restrictions, plastic articles containing certain Phthalic Esters in concentrations higher than 0.1% by weight in plasticised material must not be placed on the market.

The Department of Labour Inspection informs the consumer public that it has already started the process of immediate withdrawal of non-compliant products from the Cypriot market.

Other relevant announcements and information are available on the website of the Labour Inspection Department at http://www.mlsi.gov.cy/mlsi/dli/dliup.nsf.
