At least 18 people were killed and dozens of homes were set on fire Tuesday night during an attack on a village in central Nigeria, according to the testimony of a resident and a community cooperative leader
Authorities confirmed that an attack was committed in Ancha village in Plateau state, citing several deaths, but did not release a more specific account. Our village was attacked overnight and we count 18 dead, Deacon Ota, a resident of the community, told Agence France-Presse by telephone.
I participated in the transportation of the bodies. Several other people were injured in the attack and are being offered medical treatment at the community clinic, he added. Davidson Mallison, a cooperative officer of Irigue district, which administratively includes Ancha village, also said 18 people were killed, adding that six others were injured in the attack.
In a statement released, he also said 24 houses and several cars were set on fire. It accused nomadic pastoralists of the Pell tribe of committing the attack against members of the Irigue community. But a local Pell association condemned the attack and denied the accusation. It is truly problematic that every time the Irigue people are attacked or killed they are so quick to blame us, Muhammad Nuru Abdallah opined, according to a statement released by the Pell association.
The Governor of Plateau State, Simon Bacco Lalong, said the attack resulted in the killing of many people, condemning the endless cycle of violent attacks in the area. The Nigerian army assured that its forces were deployed to the village, but the attackers had fled hours before their arrival. Houses were destroyed and villagers lost their lives, he summed up."
