A stranger stole the bag of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel while she was shopping in a supermarket, German newspaper Bild reports.
Merkel, who ended her sixteen-year term as chancellor in December, always goes and does her shopping herself, even during her chancellorship.
On Thursday, she went to a supermarket in Berlin. Her bag was in the shopping cart. Neither Merkel nor her security guard, who was with her, noticed how someone had stolen it from there.
The chancellor did not call the police, but went to the nearest police station and there she made a statement about the theft.
According to Bild, police confirmed that a 67-year-old woman was robbed at one of the supermarkets at around 11.40am on Thursday. Police did not name the victim because it is prohibited by German law.
