The President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades had a meeting today with President Joe Biden's Special Envoy[/B] for Climate and former US Secretary of State Mr. John Kerry, shortly before the opening of the One Ocean Summit in Brest, France, today.


The meeting discussed the challenges faced by the entire humanity as a result of the climate crisis, as well as the contribution of Cyprus and the United States, respectively, to the green transition and greenhouse gas emission reduction process.

The President of the Republic also had the opportunity to elaborate on Cyprus' initiative related to the impact of climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, informing Mr. Kerry and the next steps already planned[/B] and the processes for the formulation of a "Regional Action Plan", which will take into account the particularities and specific challenges of the wider region.

President Anastasiades expressed his special appreciation for the practical support of the United States to this Initiative, which was confirmed through the participation of Mr. David Livingston, Senior Advisor to Mr. The President of the Republic of Cyprus

The President of the Republic also congratulated Mr. Kerry for his efforts on current and emerging issues related to governance of the high seas,[/B] with the ultimate goal of taking measures to protect and restore the marine environment.

During the discussion, the President of the Republicbriefed Mr. The President of the Republic informed Mr. Kerry about the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, about the essential Confidence Building Measures proposed by our side and about Turkey's ongoing challenges.



President Anastasiades and Mr. President Anastasiades and President Kerry agreed to remain in communication, with a view to deepening Cyprus-US cooperation in efforts to address the climate crisis.
